MTB Cape to Cape Western Australia 25th – 28th October 2012.

Over the four days and 225km’s, Adam and his mate Steve Kane joined 1100+ other riders to do the MTB Cape to Cape race from the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Augusta to the Dunsborough Country Club  in WA; I went with them as their support crew with Trish joining the team on the Friday night.

To say it was grueling would be an understatement, as Adam said after the first days finish at Hamelin Bay “I’ve been taken to places I’ve never been before!”

Both the guys found it tough but very rewarding and were fortunate to not have any gear failures  well one, nearly, or injuries. At one stage on the last day Steve’s rear wheel decided to come loose; luckily it didn’t cause any major dramas but it gave Steve an adrenalin rush!!  Overall their bikes held up well with only the required clean up, lube and minor adjustments  after each days race. A few competitors suffered injuries like broken collar bones, dislocated fingers etc,, and there was a lot of gear failures among the competitors, understandable under the circumstances.

My role as support was to follow them along each stage, being at the various viewing points as they passed and being ready to help them if required. Fortunately they didn’t require my assistance so I spent the time at each point taking lots of photos. Trish really enjoyed the experience and we were both glad to be able to help.

Each day back at our base house – Cape Illawarra, in Margaret River  – after the days Stage we got the food ready for the guys while they cleaned up, checked the bikes and then recovered!

For a first time effort at the race the guys did very well, finishing in the low 300’s out of 1100+ competitors. They want to return next year and I have staked my claim to be support crew again.
